Our members tell you about First Church in their own words...

Bill Long:
I am having difficulty with First Church. My problem is describing it. From time to time a friend asks me about my church and when I attempt to describe it, words fail me. What I would like to say is, 'You can't describe it, you have to experience it.'
As a relative newcomer, I am still learning what this church is all about. Last Sunday, for example, was totally unexpected. A sanctuary full of people - laughing - told me a lot about this church. And today, when Eric stopped accompanying on the organ so we could listen to ourselves singing, was a beautiful moment. Since Ruth and I always sit down front, we don't usually see all of the people behind us. But this morning during communion, as people came forward to receive the elements, I was amazed by the diversity of the people.
It seems that today church services are being classified as 'traditional' or 'contemporary'; but I just have the feeling neither term adequately describes First Church. When I mentioned this to Ruth, she described our service as a 'blended' service. That, to me, doesn't sound positive enough to describe what goes on at E. 30th and Euclid. My impression is that people come to First Church because they want to, rather than out of a sense of duty.... People come, sing, participate and make Sunday morning a time of joy.
